HISTORY

The Wellness Center, located on the Denver Federal Center in building 75 has a deep history.  Between 1941 and 1943, building 75 was one of 92 buildings constructed for an Ordnance Plant.  At first, the Denver Ordnance Plant manufactured .30-caliber ammunition, including ball, armor piercing, tracer, and incendiary rounds.  The plant employed 19,500 people and they were turning out an astounding 6.25 million rounds daily.  Building 75 most likely served as army barracks during this time.

At the close of WWII in the summer of 1945, production at the Ordnance Plant came to a halt.  There was a need for additional Federal office space, and building 75 served as a warehouse and office space.  In 1987, a group of federal employees formed a Wellness Committee and expressed the need for a workout facility on the Denver Federal Center.  Renovation in building 75 began in 1988 to build the workout facility called “The Wellness Center”, and on June 1st 1990 the committee celebrated the grand opening of the Wellness Center.

Although many changes have occurred over the years, the Denver Federal Center, including building 75, retains many reminders of its rural and manufacturing past.
